Five more jailed hunger strikers in critical condition

Five other hunger striking political prisoners from the 17 that have gone on hunger strikes in cellblock 350 were taken to the Evin Prison infirmary today. They started their hunger strike last Monday.

They were returned to solitary after receiving first aid care and continued their hunger strikes.

According to the latest reports from Evin Prison, student activist Abdollah Momeni, journalist Bahman Amouyi, civil rights activist Jafar Eqdami, civil rights activist Ibrahim Babayi who has also been injured in the Iran Iraq war and journalist Keivan Samimi were among these prisoners taken to the infirmary.

Before this, four other prisoners were taken to the infirmary after going into critical condition.

The families of these 17 prisoners became very concerned after hearing this news and requested that prison authorities see to their cases as soon as possible. They also asked the Tehran Prosecutor to provide facilities for them to visit their loved ones. (Kalameh Website – Aug. 4, 2010)

 

Political prisoner hunger strikers treated inhumanely and insulted in prison infirmary

The personnel of the Evin Prison infirmary and prison officials treat political prisoner hunger strikers who have been taken to the infirmary because of weak physical conditions unsuitably and insult them.

Instead of giving them treatment, the infirmary personnel started cursing and insulting these political prisoners.

The personnel and nurses in the infirmary shouted at the hunger strikers that ‘you are a bunch of hypocrites’, ‘you have disrupted the country and now are disrupting the prison’ and treated them unsuitably. (Committee of Human Rights Reporters – Aug. 4, 2010)

 

Security forces suppress worried families of political prisoner hunger strikers gathered outside Prosecutor’s Office

According to reports from Iran, security forces attacked families of political prisoners gathered outside the Prosecutor’s Office, ripped up pictures of their jailed loved ones and treated them with violence.

On Wednesday, August 4, at about 10 am, the families of political prisoners in cellblock 350 in Evin Prison gathered outside the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office in protest to the transfer of their loved ones to solitary cells which forced them to go on hunger strikes.

From the very beginning of the gathering, security forces were stationed around the Prosecutor’s Office and threatened the families of political prisoners with arrest. When these families insisted on their rights, they were attacked by security forces. Security forces ripped up pictures of political prisoners held by their families and insulted and verbally abused these families. (Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran – Aug. 4, 2010)

 

Academic activist sentenced to 6 years of prison and a 5 year ban on social activities

The 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Salavati sentenced Rasoul Bodaqi, a member of the managing board of the Teacher Center of Iran to six years of prison and a five year ban on social activities.

He was sentenced to one year of prison for ‘propagating against the government’ and five years of prison for ‘conspiring and assembling with the intention of disrupting national security’.

Rasoul Bodaqi was arrested on September 1, 2009 and was transferred to Rajayi Shahr (Gohardasht) Prison in Karaj in April. (Bamdad Khabar – Aug. 3, 2010)

 

Iran sentences two Bazaar merchants to heavy sentences

On Sunday August 1, political prisoner Javad Lari and Mohsen Dogmehchi were sentenced to harsh, inhumane sentences by the head of the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court, Salavati. Javad Lari was sentenced to death while Mohsen Dogmehchi was sentenced to 10 years of prison to be served in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj.

Dogmehchi is a 50-year-old well known Tehran Bazaar merchant who was taken to court from prison on Sunday August 1. He was tried on charges of giving financial aid to the families of political prisoners and the presence of his daughter in Camp Ashraf in Iraq…

Another Bazaar merchant who is still detained in cellblock 209 since December 2009 is Mohammad Banazadeh Amir Khizi. He is kept under inhumane conditions and is in an undetermined state.

Notably, Mr. Dogmehchi and Mr. Javad Lari were both political prisoners in the 80’s who were jailed for a number of years under torture. (Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran – Aug. 4, 2010)


Human rights activist expelled from job

Human rights activist and journalist Nasour Taqipour was fired from his job. According to reports, he worked two shifts in the Alborz Tile and Ceramics Factory in Qazvin and after being arrested and spending 110 days in detention for his human rights activities, he was fired from the factory.

The managers of the Alborz Tile and Ceramics Factory did not state the reason for this measure. (Human Rights Activists in Iran – Aug. 4, 2010)

 

Political activist sentenced to more than 4 years of prison for holding prayer ceremony

Ismail Sahabeh was sentenced to four and a half years of prison by Judge Salavati for playing a part in holding a Kamil prayer session (which was held to pray for the release of political prisoners after the elections).

Judge Salavati was not present in Sahabeh’s court session and issued this prison sentence without hearing his defense.

Sahabeh is a member of the Participation Front who was arrested in the Kamil prayer session and was jailed for two months before being temporarily released on bail. (Committee of Human Rights Reporters – Aug. 4, 2010)

 

Iran arrests another Baha’i resident

Behnam Mote-arefi, a Baha’i resident of Semnan was transferred to Semnan Prison to serve his prison term.

He was jailed for some time last year on charges of ‘propagating against the government and being a member of a Baha’i organization’ and was sentenced to 18 months of prison. (Human Rights Activists in Iran – Aug. 4, 2010)

 

Female political prisoner sentenced to 15 years of prison

Farah Vazham who was arrested for (participating in) the Ashura protests was sentenced to 15 years of prison on charges of being a mohareb (waging war with God) by the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court.

Vazham is currently in the public cellblock in Evin Prison and has been in ‘temporary detention’ for seven months. She was arrested two days after Ashura in her home on December 29.

This sentence which was issued by Judge Salavati was announced to her today.

She was charged with participating in the street protests and ‘waging war with God by cooperating with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran’. She had lived outside of Iran for years and only came back to Iran to be at the side of her 19 year old daughter who has cancer and is receiving chemotherapy.
