Political prisoner denied treatment while in critical condition

Political prisoner Reza Jushan has been suffering from a serious eye problem for more than one week. His eyes are red and very painful and constantly irritated which has also seriously impaired his vision.

Jushan told a prison guard that he was going blind and asked why he was not being taken to the infirmary. The guard told him that he had to wait two months for his turn in the infirmary.

Reza Jushan has been transferred to secondary cellblock 17 in cellblock 6 of Gohardasht Prison from more than 4 months ago and is kept in isolation and has been banned from calling or seeing his family in this time.

One of the head interrogators of the Intelligence Agency named Mohebi ordered the transfer of this political prisoner where he is held incommunicado.

This section is used to put pressure on prisoners. This torturer issues arrest warrants for student, labor, and political activists, dervishes and those who participated in the post-election protests. He also interrogates and physically and mentally tortures detainees.

Jushan, 25, was arrested on December 1, 2009 after agents of the Intelligence Agency raided his home. He was taken to a solitary cell in the Sepah cellblock and after two months was taken to cellblock 4. Intelligence Agents once again raided the home of this family on December 7 and arrested his mother, Zahra Asadpour Gorji. She was also taken to the Sepah Cellblock and after weeks of interrogations and physical and mental torture, was transferred to Gohardasht Prison’s female cellblock. Gorji and her daughter Fatemeh Jushan were arrested before this for visiting their family members in Camp Ashraf in Iraq and were detained for 16 months in Gohardasht Prison. They were released after serving their prison term. Gorji and her son were sentenced to one year of prison to be served in Zanjan Prison and four years of exile in the Qeilar Village in Zanjan.

Former political prisoner discloses dozens of secret executions in Mashhad

Written by Ahmad Qabel [Khamenei critic who was arrested on December 21, 2009 in post election events and was later released]

In the time that I was detained in the Vakil Abad Prison [in Mashhad] in cellblock 1/6 for three months, according to conclusive figures which I heard from prison officials and cellblock employees, more than 50 people were transferred to cellblock 1/6 and were then executed. But only in one instance when 31 people were executed, the Intelligence Agency and Khorasan Judiciary informed the Khorasan [state-run] daily that 5 international narcotics traffickers were executed. (I read this in the Khorasan daily)

Those in this cellblock know that when the decision for execution is made, free movement is limited in the cellblock and death row prisoners are transferred to the suits escorted by guards and after a few hours, in the morning or at night, everything goes back to normal. This means that those who were on death row were hanged and those who carried out the sentences have been relieved of a hard and upsetting job and our cellmates have been saved from limitations!

I had heard the appalling figures of execution in the past months and years before that from those who were in prison for a longer time which proves the real figures in only these three months compared to the officially announced figures. These executions have been carried out based on sentences for narcotics, retribution [murder], rape and … If from the viewpoint of the government, these [executions] are completely fair and defendable, why are they carried out in secret? And if it is not defendable, why is it even being carried out? Ahmad Qabel – August 8, 2010 – Fariman (Jaras Website – Aug. 9, 2010)

Judiciary asks Khamenei to hang more than 1000 prisoners in secret letter

According to reports, the head of the Judiciary has requested clearance for the execution of 1,120 people in a confidential letter to Ali Khamenei.

According to a report by Sadeq Larijani to the leader, death sentences have been issued for 1,120 people which have been confirmed by the Supreme Court and the Judiciary is waiting for clearance from the leader to carry out the sentences.

From 2005 until now, the numbers of executions have increased every year and despite claims from Iranian officials, the numbers of executions have not been able to lower the crime rate and crime rate is on the rise…

Executions and the noose have always been the solution for many problems for politicians in the Islamic Republic. For example in the ninth presidential elections in Iran, Ali Larijani who was the candidate for the traditional fundamentalists who is currently the parliament speaker, said in answer to a question regarding improper veiling from a supporter that he believed that if an improperly veiled girl was executed in public, the problem of improper veiling would be uprooted! Dian Alayi, the representative of the society of Baha’is in the United Nations said on Sunday that seven leaders of the Baha’i society in Iran were sentenced to 20 years of prison each. Their trial ended in mid June.

The Judiciary of the Islamic Republic has charged them with ‘spying, acting against national security and waging war with God’.

Ali Ajami was arrested on February 9, 2009 after an attack by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and was taken to cellblock 209 in Evin Prison. After 100 days in 209, he was transferred to cellblock 350 in Evin Prison. (Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran – Aug. 9, 2010)

Hunger striking political prisoners are banned from visits for second straight week

http://www.hra-news6.info/1389-01-27-05-27-21/3242-1.html

Hunger striking political prisoners in Evin Prison were banned from family visits for the second consecutive week which started 15 days ago after they protested the unsuitable conditions in cellblock 350 in this prison and were transferred to solitary cells. These prisoners are still on hunger strike.

A number of these prisoners have been banned for the second week while some have been banned for the third week from seeing their families. This is while Tehran prosecutor authorities and prison officials in Evin had given promises to their families who persistently came to follow up the conditions of their loved ones. They had promised these families that they would be able to visit and call their loved ones in prison; promises which have not been kept.

The lack of news on the condition of these prisoners has raised concerns for these families. They say that they do not know what has happened to their loved ones and that they have been without food for 15 days and left in their cells being banned from the smallest contact with their families.

The families of three political prisoners who are reportedly on dry hunger strikes are more worried about the condition of their loved ones.

Jailed journalists Bahman Amouyi and Keivan Samimi and student activist Majid Tavakoli have refused to drink water or tea (along with food) in their sixth day of dry hunger strike. There is no information on the condition of these three prisoners.

Reza Maleki is another political prisoner in cellblock 350 who was transferred to solitary from 5 days ago and joined the hunger strike of these 16 prisoners.

According to reports, Ehsan Abdeh Tabrizi, another prisoner in 350 is also on hunger strike. (Kalameh Website – Aug. 9, 2010)

Details of torture of teenager arrested for handing out political flyers

http://www.hra-news6.info/00/3250-1.html

Revolutionary Guards Corps Intelligence agents arrested 17 year old Ali Niknam on November 2, 2009 and tortured him after detaining him.

Niknam, who opposed the election results, was arrested on charges of carrying anti-government flyers and was subjected to torture.

“On Monday evening on November 2, I had a number of flyers calling for a march on November 3 and one of my close friends told me to go out with him to distribute the flyers…”, he said.

“Agents of the Revolutionary Guards arrested me and threw me into a Pride automobile and constantly gave me electric shocks (with electric batons), beat me and used very vulgar language in the automobile. They took me to a base near the Helal Ahmar Square [I realized later that they took me to this location] and started interrogating me while severely physically and mentally torturing me. They tortured me so severely that the wound of an operation done on my spinal cord to remove a cyst opened up one year after the surgery and the signs of electric shocks were still evident on my sides, shoulders and stomach for a long time afterwards. I also discharged blood for a few days after my release”. (Human Rights Activists in Iran – Aug. 9, 2010)

Jailed journalist on verge of paralysis denied treatment

Jailed journalist Isa Saharkhiz has been inflicted with general paralysis since Friday August 6 and is unable to move.

Rajayi Shahr (Gohardasht) Prison where Saharkhiz was transferred to from last year since the death of a number of Kurd citizens in Evin Prison has bad conditions and prison authorities are oblivious to the condition of this political prisoner. This is while Saharkhiz had been suffering from back pain and heart problems. Despite this, prison officials were not willing to grant him even a one day medical leave from prison.

According to reports from Rajayi Shahr Prison, his muscle paralysis started from last Friday which can lead to paralysis in his face, eyes and other organs and he needs immediate hospitalization. This illness which is a kind of disturbance of the nervous system comes with severe pain in the face. Transferring Saharkhiz to the hospital can prevent his complete paralysis but prison officials are still oblivious to his physical condition.

This journalist has been jailed for more than one year. His trial was held behind closed doors where he was charged with insulting the leadership and it is not clear if the judge has agreed to grant him a leave.

Saharkhiz was arrested after the elections after being beaten and was transferred to Evin Prison. This journalist was kept in temporary detention in the whole one year of his time in jail. (Jaras Website – Aug. 7, 2010)

Brother of hunger striking political prisoner pleads for one phone call with brother

Majid Tavakoli is still continuing his dry hunger strike refusing to drink or eat to demand that prisoner’s rights are not violated and is in a very poor condition.

“They have made everything very hard”, Ali Tavakoli, Majid’s brother said.

“Unfortunately, we have no news on Majid. There is no way to communicate with him. His physical condition has made us very worried. This is the third time that Majid has gone on a dry hunger strike. These people taught literacy to about 8 women and 15 children and had set up computer classes for them as well. They had transferred 200 scientific and story books for the children and teenagers to this village. Notably, because of the lack of a doctor and medical services in this village, they also took a number of villagers who needed eye care to town for treatment.

The villagers were not aware of the religion of these social activists and their activities were only for social services. According to the latest reports, the detainees were taken to the Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan and have not visited their families since their arrest. 6 death row political prisoners kept in state of limbo

http://www.hra-news6.info/00/3066-1.html

From left to right: Ali Saremi, Jafar Kazemi, Ahmad Daneshpour and Mohsen Daneshpour

After the Supreme Court denied a requested re-trial by the lawyer of death row political prisoner Jafar Kazemi, and after his case was referred to the Sentence Implementation Department, the Keyhan state-run daily said that six prisoners are awaiting execution. Their families and lawyers have said that the state of their cases is unclear.

Abdolreza Qanbari, Mohsen and Ahmad Daneshpour Moqadam, Ali Aqayari and Ali Saremi are some of these death row political prisoners.

Ali Aqayari’s lawyer, Mehdi Hojati, said, “The case of my client was referred to the Supreme Court with the case of Mr. Kazemi and I also requested a re-trial for my client but I have not received an answer and I still do not know if it has been refused or accepted”.

“My client’s case is in the 31st branch of the Supreme Court and I went to the branch today to see about the state of my client’s case and I hope that in light of the evidence and documents that we presented they will accept our request for re-trial”.

Mohsen and Ahmad Daneshpour Moqadam are a father and son who have been sentenced to death. The Tehran Prosecutor said before that this father and son and Abdolreza Qanbari had requested amnesty.

Meisam Daneshpour Moqadam, another son of Mohsen Daneshpour Moqadam said, “Despite the fact that the prosecutor announced that my father and brother had requested amnesty, their case is still in an undetermined state and we do not have any news on the results of the amnesty”.

“The sentence of my brother and father was confirmed by the court of review but unfortunately we have not seen the sentence and they have not given my father or brother or us a copy of the sentence so that we could send it to the Supreme Court and request a re-trial and we are still waiting to see about the result of the amnesty request”, he added.

“My mother’s lawyer is Mr. Sharif”, Meisam said. The death sentences for three of his other family members including his mother were lowered to prison terms.

“Despite all our efforts and the efforts of Dr. Sharif they have not allowed him to represent my father and brother. He sent his power of attorney inside the prison three times to be signed by my brother and father but unfortunately, the power of attorney never came out of prison”.

“Their cases are still in an undetermined state and they do not tell us anything. After the prosecutor announced that they had requested amnesty, 80 people were granted amnesty but my father and brother were not among them… We are extremely worried especially about my father who is 70 years old and is not even able to walk and others in the case testified in court that he was innocent. But it is very surprising that neither the initial court nor the court of review did not pay any heed to this matter and issued and upheld the sentence”, he added.

Abdolreza Qanbari, is a teacher who has been sentenced to death and the Tehran Prosecutor also said that he had requested amnesty.

A person close to him said, “We do not have any news on the results of the amnesty request and his case is in an undetermined state and we do not have a copy of the sentence to protest to the Supreme Court”.

“His lawyer was appointed for him and we do not even have any news on his lawyer”, he added.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Qanbari’s appointed lawyer is not from the Justice Department Lawyer Center and is a lawyer who got his permit from the Judiciary according to article 187 of the Economical Development Program and not from the Center of Lawyers and we do not even have access to him to see about the measures that have been taken or will be taken or even if he has a copy of the sentence so that we could request a re-trial. On the other hand we do not know about the circumstances of the amnesty request and we have not received any answers and are extremely worried”, he added. Prisoner in critical condition denied proper treatment

http://hrdai.blogspot.com/2010/08/blog-post_6064.html

According to reports, the physical state of prisoner Khaled Hardani was critical in the morning and he was taken to the Gohardasht Prison infirmary.

On Monday August 2 at about 4 am, his condition deteriorated in his solitary cell in cellblock 1 known as the ‘doghouse’ and he was kept in the cell in his condition until 9 am. He tried to call prison guards by knocking on his cell door to inform them about his critical condition but they paid no heed to his calls and requests.

At about 9 am when his condition became very critical he was taken to the infirmary. Despite his very poor physical health, he was once again taken back to his cell in the ‘doghouse’.

This prisoner suffers from heart palpitation, kidney hemorrhage, stomach problems and the extreme pain of these illnesses.

Hardani was attacked by a prison gang which takes orders from the head of cellblock 4 on July 22. He was then summoned by Mahmoud Moghnian, the head of cellblock 4, and was insulted and beaten before being transferred to a solitary cell in cellblock 1. Details of barbaric torture of social activist

Physical torture is a human rights violation that has been carried out against political prisoners from a very long time ago and because the media is focused on Tehran’s prisons, this inhumane treatment is being carried out much more violently in other towns especially in Kurdistan. The report below is an example of this brutal treatment of a Kurd prisoner named Ahmad Bob.

Ahmad Bob, is a social activist from Marivan who was jailed for 195 days in prison and was under severe physical and mental torture.

He was arrested on September 27, 2009 after agents of the Ministry of Intelligence broke down his home door and took him away with blindfolds without an arrest warrant. He was taken to a solitary cell in the Marivan Intelligence Agency. On the first night of his detainment he was interrogated and tortured without being formally charged…

In the first hours of detention, he had to confess that he was in contact with anti-revolutionary groups and had disrupted public order by bringing together people against the Islamic Republic. Since he was a civil rights and social activist, he did not accept any of the charges and did not give into confessing to lies and for this reason was tortured physically and mentally much more severely.

He was beaten with a military belt, kicked and punched by three people while shackled and blindfolded. His hands were then opened and while two people held his hands, another person opened his mouth and pulled out three of his front bottom teeth with pliers.

This was done by first loosening the teeth with pliers and then pulling it out and was continued until Bob passed out. Broken teeth, teeth that were pulled out, bloody clothes, inability to speak, gum inflammation, a bruised skull as a result of baton strikes and bruised eyes were the conclusion of Ahmad Bob’s first day of detention…

Batons, logs, military belts, pliers and vulgar and insulting language were the tools used to torture him. He was usually interrogated and tortured from sunset until sunrise to force him to make false confessions. In the first 33 days of his detention, he was not given any kind of medical treatment.

He was forced to sit on his knees and then stand up 1000 times and when he did this 100 times, he would be forced to do it all over again because he had missed a number. They beat him so much with a military belt that he was unable to stand on his feet.

He would also be forced to stand up for a long period of time which would sometimes continue for 10 hours. He was threatened at gun point and was asked to choose which of his fingers he would prefer to be blown off first.

They would keep him in a standing position and would then drop the pliers from over his head on his toes and blood gushed out on his toenails with every strike. They insisted he confess that he spied for America in these tortures.

They also threatened him with rape saying that raping infidels was lawful. He would be forced to sit on a lit gas stove but was severely beaten for resisting.

Ahmad Bob spent 33 days of his incarceration in a solitary cell in Marivan where he was under severe torture. He was kept in a cell which was the size of a soldier’s army blanket and was allowed to use the restroom three times a day which was also the only time he had access to drinking water.

His interrogations usually started at noon or in the afternoon and continued until the next morning and he was denied food in this time. He also was not given anything to wash himself

with in these 33 days and was also deprived of bathing facilities. He was sometimes forced to crawl to the bathroom because of his severe weakened state. After 33 days, he was allowed to bathe but because of his physical condition and weakness he was only able to wash his hair with the help of a soldier.

After being transferred to Sanandaj Prison, he was kept in the quarantine section for 14 days where he was treated because he was suffering from skin diseases, gum infection and hemorrhage. He was then transferred to a solitary cell in the Sanandaj Intelligence Prison where he was interrogated and once again tortured.

He was tortured for refusing to make false confessions on television. He was laid on a bed and his hands were handcuffed to the bed along with his legs and toes. Then they started to whip the bottom of his feet while reciting the Quran.

He passed out a number of times under the strikes but was revived with water and the lashing continued. He could not control his urine in this time and vomited and was forced to wash the dirty blanket on the torture bed in his cell. According to his interrogators he was whipped 320 times.

The sounds that were played for him for three consecutive days via a headphone abused and tormented him. After four months and 20 days they told him to write his will because he was to be hanged.

He was taken to a room that same day which according to his interrogator was used for execution. He was forced to stand on a chair with wheels under a noose and forced to pull the noose around his neck. He was then handcuffed and shackled. This political prisoner was interrogated in this position and pressured into making false confessions.

After an hour, he was brought out from the noose. According to Bod at that time his whole body was wet and he was unable to stand up and fell to the ground like a corpse.

In one of the interrogations, his interrogator put out his cigarette on his elbow and told him that it was a memento to remember him by.

Interrogators of the Intelligence Agency took him by the tongue with pliers and pulled him around the room which rendered him unable to speak for four days. He was forced to make animal noises while moving on the ground on his hands and feet in the interrogation room. When he refused to do this, he was severely beaten again. They drilled holes in both soles of his feet and the signs of this barbaric torture are still evident on his feet. Being hanged from his legs was another form of torture carried out on Ahmad Bob.

In the five months of his incarceration, he was only allowed to call his family once. He was told to tell his family to come to visit him in prison. This is while his family was not allowed to visit him when they came to prison and instead his pregnant wife was interrogated for five hours. After 155 days, he was taken to the Marivan Public Prison. In this time, he did not have access to a lawyer.

He cannot easily walk because of the torture and the nerves on the bottom of his feet have been severely damaged. After 165 days of incarceration along with torture, he was released from prison on a 700 million rial (about 70,000 dollar) bail.
